Player Outlook
Trent Grisham's most obvious real-life value has always been tied to his defense, though his potential to package double-digit homers and steals has kept him from falling entirely off the fantasy radar. Last season, he notched a career-high 15 thefts and slugged 13 long balls but was largely unrosterable due to batting a meager .198, falling below the Mendoza Line for the second straight year. Grisham was awarded for his patience at the plate with an elite 13.5% walk rate, but his affinity for taking pitches wasn't all positive -- he passed on considerably more pitches in the best areas of the strike zone than the average major-leaguer, which combined with a 28.3% whiff rate to result in a poor 27.8% strikeout rate. Grisham's glove gave him a considerable amount of job security during his tenure to San Diego, but after moving to the Yankees in the Juan Soto deal, he'll likely spend the 2024 campaign in a fourth-outfielder role.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Accounts for team's only runs

Grisham went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's loss to the Blue Jays. Grisham plated New York's only two runs of the game with a blast to left field in the fifth inning. The outfielder has just 10 hits in 69 at-bats this season for a paltry .145 average, though half of those hits have been homers. All five of Grisham's long balls have come against right-handed pitchers.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Sitting against lefty Wednesday

Grisham is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets. After cracking the starting lineup Sunday against Atlanta in the Yankees' first game following Giancarlo Stanton's (hamstring) move to the injured list, Grisham has now hit the bench for both contests against the Mets. The Yankees have faced left-handed starters for both matchups with the Mets, which may be the primary reason the lefty-hitting Grisham has been out of the lineup. Grisham could occupy the larger side of a de facto platoon with the right-handed-hitting J.D. Davis for the final open spot in the New York lineup while Stanton is on the shelf.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Starting Sunday

Grisham will start in center field and bat ninth in Sunday's series finale against Atlanta. Grisham will enter the lineup as a replacement for Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), who was placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Aaron Judge will occupy Stanton's typical spot at designated hitter, while Grisham claims Judge's vacated spot in the outfield. Though the lefty-hitting Grisham is starting Sunday against Atlanta southpaw Max Fried, the Yankees could look to deploy Grisham primarily against right-handed pitching during Stanton's absence. While seeing sporadic playing time this season, Grisham enters Sunday's contest with a .113/.263/.306 slash line across 76 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Pops homer off bench

Grisham went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Saturday's 8-3 win over Atlanta. Grisham has gone 5-for-23 over 11 games in June, with three of those hits being homers. The outfielder has functioned in a reserve role for much of the season, and he's done little to deserve anything more than that. The 27-year-old is slashing a paltry .113/.263/.306 with four homers, 10 RBI, seven runs scored and no stolen bases through 76 plate appearances. Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) is set to miss time after exiting Saturday's game, but it's unclear if Grisham will see much of an uptick in playing time.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Drawing start in series finale

Grisham will start in center field and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Royals. Grisham's streak of five straight starts in the outfield came to an end Tuesday, but he'll re-enter the lineup Thursday following back-to-back absences while Giancarlo Stanton receives a day off. Now that Juan Soto is back in action after recently missing time with a forearm injury, Grisham should serve as the Yankees' fourth outfielder for most games.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Provides timely home run

Grisham went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer and two walks in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Dodgers. Grisham, who's been in the lineup the last four days while Juan Soto tends to forearm inflammation, provided some clutch hitting with a three-run blast off Tyler Glasnow in the sixth to put the Yankees up 5-3. Grisham now has five hits on the year, with three of those being home runs. He should continue to find himself in the lineup as long as Soto is unable to go. The 27-year-old Grisham is now slashing just .100/.258/.280 with nine RBI, four runs and a 10:19 BB:K in 62 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Snaps long hitless stretch

Grisham went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI on Thursday in an 8-5 win over Minnesota. Entering Thursday, Grisham hadn't notched a hit in over five weeks, going 0-for-19 across his previous 11 games. He snapped the brutal slump in fine fashion against the Twins, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning to give New York its first lead. Grisham also delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth, though he added another strikeout to his season stat line. Despite Thursday's performance, it's been an atrocious first season in New York for Grisham -- he's slashing a paltry .071/.216/.214 with a career-worst 31.4 percent strikeout rate through 51 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Back in bench role

Grisham is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Grisham recently made four consecutive starts in center field, but three came while Alex Verdugo was away from the team on paternity leave. With Verdugo having rejoined the Yankees on Thursday, Grisham has predictably moved back into a fourth-outfielder role. He'll take a seat for the third straight game Sunday.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Nabs fourth straight start

Grisham will start in center field and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Orioles, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Grisham will get his fourth straight start in center field, but his run of regular playing time should soon come to an end. During the first three starts, the Yankees were without Alex Verdugo (personal), who was on the paternity list. Verdugo has rejoined the Yankees for Thursday's series finale in Baltimore and will start in left field, but New York will have room in center field for Grisham once again while Aaron Judge serves as the designated hitter in place of a resting Giancarlo Stanton. Grisham will be relegated to the fourth-outfielder role for games in which all of Judge, Verdugo, Stanton and Juan Soto are included in the lineup.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Draws second start of season

Grisham will start in center field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. He'll crack the lineup for just the second time in the Yankees' first seven games of the season while Giancarlo Stanton gets a breather and Aaron Judge fills in for him as the designated hitter. While all of Stanton, Judge, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo are all healthy, Grisham looks as though he'll be limited to a fourth-outfielder role.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Avoids arbitration

Grisham signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Grisham was acquired by the Yankees this offseason in the Juan Soto trade. Grisham is likely to serve as the team's fourth outfielder to begin 2024, though he could get some extra appearances late in games due to his strong defense.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Sent to Yankees with Soto

The Padres traded Grisham and Juan Soto to the Yankees on Wednesday in exchange for Kyle Higashioka, Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Grisham finished with 13 homers and 50 RBI last year, but he has hit below .200 in each of his last two seasons. His recent performance combined with the presence of Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo and now Juan Soto in New York's outfield almost certainly locks Grisham into a reserve role with the Yankees in 2024.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: On bench versus lefty

Grisham is not in the lineup Wednesday at San Francisco. It's the second straight absence for Grisham, with the Padres facing back-to-back lefties. Jose Azocar will start in center field and bat eighth in Wednesday's series finale against the Giants and southpaw Sean Manaea.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Sitting versus southpaw

Grisham is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Grisham is mired in an 0-for-17 slump and will take a seat Sunday with lefty Drew Rom pitching for St. Louis. Jose Azocar will start in center field and bat ninth.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Gets Monday off

Grisham is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies, according to Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Grisham will head to the bench for a second straight day with southpaw Ty Blach getting the start for Colorado on Monday. As was the case Sunday, Jose Azocar will man center field in Grisham's place.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Productive in Friday's win

Grisham went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, two runs and a stolen base in Friday's 11-2 win over the Astros. Grisham got things done in a variety of ways in the blowout victory. He's collected three multi-hit efforts over his first six games in September after ending August in an 0-for-26 slump. The outfielder is up to a .205/.315/.364 slash line with 13 homers, 14 steals, 46 RBI and 60 runs scored through 136 contests. He remains a regular in the lineup, though he's hit at the bottom of the order for a majority of the season.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Notches 13th steal in two-hit game

Grisham went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base against the Phillies in Monday's loss. Grisham just finished a rough August during which he slashed .156/.270/.208 with a 36.3 percent strikeout rate over 27 contests. September has started a bit more favorably for him, as he's notched two multi-hit performances thus far while going 4-for-10 through three games. Grisham's defense and power/speed potential have helped keep him in a near-everyday role in center field for the Padres, though his .203/.314/.356 slash line and 29.3 percent strikeout rate on the campaign are hardly the stuff of fantasy greatness.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Sitting amid slump

Grisham is absent from the lineup Tuesday at St. Louis. Jose Azocar will start in center field and bat ninth as the Padres take on left-hander Zack Thompson. The lefty-swinging Grisham has gone hitless over his last eight games and is batting just .082/.237/.143 in 60 plate appearances since Aug. 8.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Cranks homer in win

Grisham went 1-for-2 with a solo home run, an additional run scored and a walk in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Orioles. Grisham got a day off Tuesday to reset amid a 1-for-20 slump over his last six games, and it appears to have done him some good. The outfielder went deep in the seventh inning Wednesday to pad the Padres' lead to 4-2. For the season, he's up to 12 homers, 12 stolen bases, 39 RBI, 55 runs scored and a .211/.317/.381 slash line through 116 games in a near-everyday role.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Sitting amid slump

Grisham is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Orioles. Grisham has gone 1-for-20 with 11 strikeouts over his last six games and his season OPS has dropped to .687. Fernando Tatis will patrol center field for the Padres on Tuesday as Ben Gamel gets a chance in right.
