  Estes (2-3) took the loss Wednesday against the Angels, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out eight. Estes set a career high in strikeouts Wednesday but fell one out shy of a second consecutive quality start. The 22-year-old was lifted from the contest in favor of Austin Adams without having allowed a run, but Estes was responsible for a pair of runners who'd come around to score later in the inning. On the year, Estes owns a 5.24 ERA with a 39:12 K:BB over 46.1 innings. He's scheduled for a rematch with the Angels early next week.

  Estes allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader. Both Estes and Twins starter Chris Paddack were hit hard in the early innings, and neither completed three frames. This was Estes' shortest outing of the season, and it's the first time in four starts he's given up more than three runs. The right-hander is now at a 5.97 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings over seven starts. His next outing is projected to come at home in a rematch versus the Twins.

  Estes (2-2) took the loss against San Diego on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Estes managed to get through two scoreless frames but gave up one run in each of his final three innings. Two of the tallies came on solo homers -- one by Jake Cronenworth and the other by Fernando Tatis. Estes had allowed just one run on three hits over 11.1 frames across his previous two starts coming into Monday, and he's allowed one or zero runs in half of his six MLB starts so far this season. That should give him plenty of buffer room in holding onto a big-league starting role, especially considering the injuries that have hit the Athletics' rotation.

• Athletics' Joey Estes: Excellent in win

  Estes (2-1) allowed one hit and struck out five without walking a batter over 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Mariners on Wednesday. Estes retired 18 straight batters to start the game before giving up a leadoff double to J.P. Crawford in the seventh inning. This was easily the best start of Estes' young career, and he's now allowed one run or fewer in three of his five outings in 2024. He's still at a 4.67 ERA, but his 0.96 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB over 27 innings are more indicative of the quality of his pitching. He's projected to make his next start on the road in San Diego.

• Athletics' Joey Estes: Gives team five solid frames

  Estes allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. The only run Estes allowed came in the fourth inning, when he began the frame by hitting Isaac Paredes with a pitch before serving up a run-scoring triple off the bat of Brandon Lowe. Promisingly, Estes recovered to retire the next three batters without allowing Lowe to cross the plate, and he finished off his outing with another scoreless inning. Though Estes holds a 6.10 ERA through 20.2 frames this season, he's held his own in three of his four starts -- the poor earned-run average is largely due to an eight-run, 3.2-inning blowup against Houston in his second appearance.

  Estes (1-1) was hit with the loss Thursday against the Astros, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over 3.2 innings while striking out four. Estes struggled with his command out of the gate and was lucky to get through the first two innings unscathed despite allowing four batters to reach over that span. However, the traffic would finally catch up with the 22-year-old right-hander in the third after he issued a walk to Kyle Tucker to open the frame, which would eventually lead to six runs coming across for Houston in the inning. Estes would surrender another two runs in the fourth and actually allowed the leadoff man to reach in all four innings in which he appeared. It was a disappointing performance after he threw just 61 pitches over five frames in his first outing and did not walk a batter.

  Estes is slated to start Thursday's game against the Astros in Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. He'll be awarded his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five and allowing just one run over five innings last weekend in Seattle following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Estes could be in line for an extended run in the big-league rotation with Paul Blackburn (foot) recently going on the injured list and with Alex Wood (shoulder) also at risk of being deactivated.

Despite a 2-3 record with a 6.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in Triple-A this season, Estes will take to the mound for the Athletics on Saturday in his season debut. The 22-year-old right-hander started in two games for Oakland last season, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 10 innings. To make room for Estes, the Athletics optioned left-hander Easton Lucas to Triple-A Las Vegas.

  Estes worked 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Estes was shaky early, giving up a solo homer to Edouard Julien in the first inning and yielding another run in the second. The right-hander mostly settled in from there, holding the Twins scoreless across the third to fifth frames before being charged with another run following his departure in the sixth. Estes threw 75 pitches in the start, so this was presumably his final appearance of the campaign. If that's the case, he'll finish with 7.20 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 10 innings during his first taste of the majors. He'll look to earn a rotation spot coming out of spring training in 2024.

  Estes (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as the A's were downed 6-3 by the Mariners, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Called up earlier in the day to make his big-league debut. Estes got a rude welcome from Seattle's hitters, as Dominic Canzone slugged a two-run shot off the 21-year-old righty in the second inning before Julio Rodriguez (hand) and Cal Raleigh launched back-to-back solo shots in the fifth. Estes could end up having an impact on the race for the AL West title even though he took the loss. He hit two batters with pitches, including Rodriguez in the third inning, and the M's superstar was sent for precautionary X-rays after the game. The A's haven't yet indicated whether Estes will remain in the rotation for one more start next week before the season is over.

  The Athletics plan to call up Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Estes was dealt from Atlanta to Oakland in March 2022 as part of the trade that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta. Estes has spent the 2023 campaign with Double-A Midland and Las Vegas, posting a 3.74 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 137 innings over 27 appearances (23 starts) in the minors. The 21-year-old will have an opportunity to make a late-season impression for the rebuilding Athletics. Since he made his final start with Las Vegas on Friday, he could slot into the big-league rotation as soon as Wednesday against the Mariners in Oakland.
