Player Outlook
Ji-Hwan Bae began the 2023 season as a regular in the Pirates' lineup by serving in a strong-side platoon role, albeit split between second base and center field. Even after missing one and a half months with an ankle injury, Bae ended the season with 24 stolen bases - a useful haul even in the new offensive environment in which steals are more prevalent. From there, however, there's little positive to point to. Bae posted just a .081 ISO and had a putrid barrel rate of 2.0 percent and an average launch angle of 1.1 degrees. It would still be possible to salvage that profile with strong plate discipline, yet Bae struck out at nearly a 25 percent clip which to a .296 on-base percentage. Not a strong defensive second baseman (-6 DRS), Bae's future role in Pittsburgh is unclear heading into 2024 as he'll be competing with Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales and Jack Suwinski for playing time, all of whom are almost certain to prioritized ahead of him. For fantasy purposes, he's best suited as a streaming option for stolen bases in most formats.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Activated and optioned

The Pirates activated Bae (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Bae has recovered from the sprained right wrist that sent him to the IL earlier this month, but the Pirates have elected to keep him at Indianapolis, where he had been on a rehab assignment. He's gone 5-for-24 at the plate this season for the Pirates and has missed time with hip and wrist problems. Pittsburgh will proceed with a platoon of Jack Suwinski and Michael Taylor in center field.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Ready for rehab assignment

Bae (wrist) will join Triple-A Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment Thursday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. The outfielder has been sidelined since early June with a sprained right wrist. Given his short absence, Bae shouldn't need extensive time in the minors to get ramped up before being activated. While Bae has been sidelined, the Pirates have been leaning on a combination of Jack Suwinski and Michael Taylor in center field.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Nearing rehab assignment

Bae (wrist) participated in live batting practice Monday, MLB.com reports. Bae has also resumed defensive work. Manager Derek Shelton indicated that Bae is close to beginning a rehab assignment, meaning he should be activated from the injured list prior to the end of June, barring any setbacks.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Out multiple weeks

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Friday that Bae (wrist) won't grip a bat for 10 to 14 days, MLB.com reports. Bae landed on the injured list Tuesday with a right wrist sprain and won't be ready to return after the minimum 10 days. His ongoing absence should allow Jack Suwinski to hold down the strong side of a platoon in center field for the foreseeable future.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Lands on injured list

Bae was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a sprained right wrist, Alex Stumpf of MLB.comreports. Bae presumably suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, during which he went 1-for-5 with a strikeout. It's unclear how long the 24-year-old will be sidelined, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the active roster June 13. Jack Suwinski was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move and should see regular playing time going forward, especially since outfielder Michael Taylor was also placed on the paternity list Tuesday.

Bae isn't in the Pirates' lineup for Saturday's game against Toronto, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Sitting against lefty

Bae is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Tigers. The lefty-hitting Bae will give way to the right-handed-hitting Michael Taylor in center field while the Tigers send southpaw Tarik Skubal to the bump for the first game of the day. Bae should be back in the starting nine for the second game, when right-hander Keider Montero will start for Detroit.

Bae is out of the lineup Sunday against Atlanta. The lefty-hitting Bae will retreat to the bench against southpaw Chris Sale as the Pirates look for a series sweep against Atlanta. Michael Taylor will start at center field and bat eighth, but Bae appears to have moved into the strong side of a platoon with the veteran.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: May poach playing time from Taylor

Bae will start in center field and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Giants, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Bae will stick in the starting nine for the second time in three games and may end up getting a look in the strong side of a platoon in center field with the right-handed-hitting Michael Taylor, who is on the bench Thursday and has been withheld from the lineup in four straight matchups versus righties. After being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Bae impressed in his 2024 big-league debut later that night, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, two runs and an RBI.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Recall made official

The Pirates recalled Bae from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Bae began the season on the injured list with a hip issue and was optioned once healthy. He's earned a promotion following a terrific run at Indianapolis, though, during which he sported a .367/.479/.551 batting line with four home runs and seven stolen bases over 27 games. Bae is capable at a handful of positions but is mostly a second baseman and center fielder. He could see semi-regular duty.

Bae will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to the Pirates' game against the Giants on Tuesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The 24-year-old has played center field, second base and left field with Indianapolis and should bounce around to multiple positions in Pittsburgh.

Bae (hip) was activated from the 10-day injured list by the Pirates on Sunday and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He should be back to fill a utility role with the big club eventually.

Bae (hip) had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, MLB.com reports. • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Placed on 10-day IL

The Pirates placed Bae on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a left hip flexor strain. Bae is coming along in his recovery, having progressed to full baseball activities, but he simply ran out of time to be ready for Opening Day. The Pirates are thus hopeful that Bae's stay on the IL will be a brief one. Once healthy, he's pegged for a utility role.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Running progression next week

Bae (hip) will begin a running progression next week, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Bae has been doing all other baseball activities, but the running progression will be key as he comes back from a left hip flexor injury. A stint on the injured list would appear assured for the 24-year-old, with a clearer timetable available once he ramps up his running.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Battling hip issue

Bae hasn't appeared in a spring training game since March 5 due to a hip injury, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Bae is expected to serve as a versatile bench bat due to his ability to play along both the infield and in the outfield. Manager Derek Shelton didn't provide any further detail regarding the injury or a timeline for Bae's return. If he's forced to miss any regular season action, Joshua Palacios (illness) and Nick Gonzales could earn a roster spot.

  • Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Likely headed for bench role

Bae is likely to begin the 2024 season as the Pirates' fourth outfielder, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports. Bae started 92 games for the Pirates in 2023, 56 of which came at second base and 33 in center field. His results were subpar, as he measured out as a well below average defender at second base while posting just a 66 wRC+ across 371 plate appearances. As a result, he's likely to begin the new campaign in a reserve outfield role, with Nick Gonzales, Liover Peguero and Jared Triolo vying for at-bats at second base.
