Among the most heated position battles in camp is at backup RB behind Trent Richardson. It's a pleasant problem to have, as the Browns didn't have any effective tailbacks last year.

Brandon Jackson missed the entire season with turf toe. Montario Hardesty was hampered all year by foot and calf injuries. Both are healthy and showing tremendous quickness in camp.Chris Ogbonnaya also is in the mix for playing time.

Many NFL teams are giving a significant number of carries to two backs. The Browns are hoping Richardson forces the team to use him as a four-down player and receive the majority of carries. Richardson is not just the most-talented runner of the bunch, but he's also a good receiver.

The Browns have been seeking a breakaway back since the days of Greg Pruitt. They don't want a guy capable of breaking off a long run sitting on the bench.

So where does that leave Hardesty, Jackson and Ogbonnaya?

"They have to be able to go in for three, four, five, six carries a game or four or five a month," said coach Pat Shurmur. "They have to be able to give Trent a breather and be effective with getting fewer reps in practice. They also need to contribute on special teams."
