Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Not ready to start Sunday
Taillon (back) will not start Sunday's game in Pittsburgh, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Taillon had to be scratched from a scheduled start Friday due to back stiffness. He had hoped to take the ball Sunday after throwing off a mound Saturday, but he's not quite ready even though the mound session reportedly went well. It's unclear at this point when Taillon might be ready to make his next start, but there seems to be optimism he can avoid the injured list.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: No longer starting Friday
Taillon won't start Friday in Pittsburgh, as the Cubs list Javier Assad as their starter for the series opener versus the Pirates, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The late change perhaps hints that Taillon may be tending to an injury. The decision to have Assad take the hill for the series opener instead wouldn't seem to be the result of any dissatisfaction with Taillon's performance, as the 32-year-old has opened his second season with the Cubs with a 3-0 record, 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over 24 innings. Justin Steele will take the hill on four days' rest to start Saturday, while the Cubs are listing their starter for Sunday's series finale as "TBA." More clarity on Chicago's plans for Sunday -- as well as when Taillon might next pitch -- could come prior to Friday's contest.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Dealing with back stiffness
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Taillon was scratched from Friday's start against the Pirates due to back stiffness, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Taillon felt his back tighten up Tuesday when playing catch, and it didn't improve in time for him to make his scheduled start in the series opener. Counsell noted that the right-hander's back issue is not as bad as the one he dealt with in spring training, which caused Taillon to start the season on the 15-day IL. He will be re-evaluated Saturday, and there's a chance he could take the mound Sunday. Javier Assad will start Friday while Justin Steele will get the nod Saturday.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Beats Brewers for third win
Taillon (3-0) earned the win over the Brewers on Saturday, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
The bullpen allowed Milwaukee back into the game with five runs, though Hector Neris ultimately shut the door to preserve the win. Taillon's seven strikeouts Saturday set a season high after he'd previously topped out at four Ks in an outing. Since returning from a back injury, Taillon has allowed just three earned runs with a 16:5 K:BB over 24 innings. Regression will come at some point, but Taillon will have a great chance to keep the good times rolling next weekend in Pittsburgh.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Excellent in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He struck out one.
Taillon was able to complete six innings for the first time this season and managed to exceed seven innings in just 78 pitches. Taillon's lone blemish came from the first batter he faced as Brandon Nimmo clubbed a solo home run in the first frame. The veteran righty has yet to yield multiple earned runs through three starts, owning an impressive 1.50 ERA. However, he's only been able to punch out nine batters in his 18.0 innings of work. Taillon is set to close out a two-start week with a matchup against the Brewers on Saturday.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Nabs second straight victory
Taillon (2-0) earned the win over Houston on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings.
Taillon yielded a fair amount of baserunners, but he was unscored upon outside of a two-run third inning. The right-hander notched just five whiffs among his 89 pitches, though that didn't prevent him from picking up his second straight victory to begin the campaign. Taillon got a late start to the season after opening on the injured list due to a back injury, but he already seems to be settled in as a key piece of Chicago's rotation.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Sharp in season debut
Taillon (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Marlins, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over five innings.
Taillon didn't show any signs of rust in his first start of the campaign, holding the Marlins to a Bryan De La Cruz solo homer in the fourth inning. It's an encouraging effort from the 32-year-old right-hander, who went 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA in an inconsistent 2023 season. He's currently in line to face the Astros at home in his next start.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Activated from IL
The Cubs reinstated Taillon (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Taillon would have made his season debut Thursday against Miami, however the game was postponed due to rain. The 32-year-old right-hander will now start Friday after making two rehab appearances, during which he surrendered four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts across 6.1 innings. Hayden Wesneski was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.
