  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Suffers left elbow bruise

Sosa was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks and has a left elbow contusion, Brooke Destra of NBCSPhilly reports.

Sosa was removed from the game after the HPB and his X-rays returned negative. Though he appears to have avoided a serious injury, Sosa should still be considered day-to-day. He went 0-for-1 with a run scored prior to exiting.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Hitting bench in Turner's return

Sosa is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres.

After Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list May 4, Sosa took over as the Phillies' primary shortstop and slashed an impressive .275/.336/.505 with four home runs, three stolen bases, 22 runs and 17 RBI in 32 games while the two-time All-Star was sidelined. Turner will make his return from the IL on Monday and will immediately step back into his everyday role at shortstop, leaving Sosa without a regular spot in the lineup. Manager Rob Thomson said earlier this month that Sosa could get some reps in the outfield upon Turner's return, but David Dahl, Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos will form the Phillies' outfield trio from left to right Monday. With no path to steady playing time at the moment, Sosa looks to be a drop candidate outside of deeper mixed leagues or NL-only leagues.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Homers in loss

Sosa went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 6-2 loss to the Orioles on Saturday.

Sosa gave the Phillies an early 2-0 lead when he homered off Grayson Rodriguez in the second inning. Sosa hit .306 in May with three home runs, but he has gone just 8-for-37 with one long ball in June. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Trea Turner's return from a hamstring injury is nearing, which means Sosa will likely return to a bench role in the coming days.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Receiving rest day

Sosa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox.

Sosa will get a breather after he went 4-for-20 with three RBI and two runs while starting each of the Phillies' last six games at shortstop. Bryson Stott will move over from the keystone to cover shortstop in Sosa's stead, opening up second base for Whit Merrifield.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Could get looks in outfield

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Saturday that Sosa could be an option to see reps in the outfield once shortstop Trea Turner (hamstring) returns from the 10-day injured list, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Sosa has logged a total of just 5.1 innings of outfield in the majors and has never started a game in the outfield in the professional ranks. He's been outstanding at shortstop since Turner got hurt, slashing .310/.380/.606 with three home runs in 22 games, which has the Phillies contemplating other ways of keeping him in the lineup long term. The Phillies could have an opening in left field if Brandon Marsh (hamstring) needs to miss time, but Sosa will still be needed at shortstop until Turner is back.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Not in Sunday's lineup

Sosa is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Sosa started the past 10 games at shortstop and posted a 1.026 OPS during that span, but he'll take a seat for Sunday's contest. Bryson Stott will shift to shortstop while Kody Clemens receives a start at the keystone.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Swats three-run homer

Sosa went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run during Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Rangers.

The shortstop tagged Jonathan Hernandez for a round-tripper in the fourth inning, plating Nick Castellanos and Brandon Marsh. The long ball was Sosa's second of the campaign and his first in 51 at-bats, dating back to April 7. Since Trea Turner (hamstring) was placed on the injured list May 4, Sosa is 11-for-37 (.297) with 12 runs and nine RBI.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Sosa is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Rangers.

Sosa has received most of the starts at shortstop since Trea Turner went down and boasts a .924 OPS over that time. However, the Phillies are going with Bryson Stott at shortstop and Kody Clemens at second base versus righty Jon Gray and the Rangers.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Stays hot at dish Sunday

Sosa went 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a stolen base, two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Marlins.

Sosa has been getting the job done as the primary replacement at shortstop for Trea Turner, who was placed on the 10-day injured list May 4 with a left hamstring strain. While starting in seven of the last eight games, Sosa has gotten on base at a .444 clip while contributing three extra-base hits (one triple, two doubles) and two stolen bases. He'll remain in the starting nine once again Monday against the Mets, manning shortstop while batting sixth.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Heading to bench Monday

Sosa is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Sosa started at shortstop in the Phillies' first two games after Trea Turner (hamstring) landed on the 10-day injured list, going 2-for-8 with a two RBI, one run and one stolen base. Though he could still end up serving as the primary option at shortstop during Turner's absence, Sosa will give way to Bryson Stott on Monday while Whit Merrifield fills in at Stott's usual spot at second base.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Starting Saturday

Sosa is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Saturday's game against the Giants.

Sosa appears set to take over as the primary shortstop with Trea Turner landing on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Sosa has appeared in nine games this season and is 6-for-21 with two runs, one double, one home run and two RBI over that span.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Excels in start at second base

Sosa went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and an additional run batted in Sunday against the Nationals.

Sosa made his first appearance in over a week, filling in for Bryson Stott -- who got the day off -- at second base. He delivered his first long ball of the campaign, tagging MacKenzie Gore for a solo homer in the fifth frame. He got only two looks at the plate, with Stott coming in to replace Sosa in the eighth inning. The utility man should continue to play sparingly, but he's a decent bat when in the lineup.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Expected back Thursday

Phillies manager Rob Thomson expects Sosa (foot) to return to the lineup Thursday, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Sosa was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to a bruised left foot, which occurred when he fouled a ball off the area. However, Sosa likely could have played if needed, and he'll miss only one day of action.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Scratched with foot contusion

Sosa was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta because of a left foot contusion, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Weston Wilson will take Sosa's spot at shortstop and Aramis Garcia will enter the lineup at designated hitter. Sosa should be considered day-to-day.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Settles at $1.7 million

Sosa signed a one-year, $1.7 million contract with the Phillies on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Sosa hit .251 and managed a .720 OPS with 30 RBI through 299 plate appearances in 2023. While last season ended up being one of Sosa's best at the plate, his role remains limited due to the presence of Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm and Trea Turner in Philadelphia's infield.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Sits for Game 1 of twin bill

Sosa is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Sosa went 4-for-18 with a home run, a stolen base, two RBI and three runs while making five starts in the Phillies' past seven games, but he'll be back on the bench for the first game of Monday's twin bill. Despite the uptick in playing time of late, Sosa still looks to be viewed as a utility man and doesn't have a direct path to an everyday spot in the lineup.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Triple, home run in win

Sosa went 2-for-4 with a triple and a two-run homer in Monday's 10-4 win over the Giants.

Sosa put the Phillies ahead 3-1 with a two-run blast off of Sean Manaea in the second inning before picking up his second triple of the year in the fourth. It's an encouraging effort for Sosa, who's now 4-for-6 over his last three games. However, he's retreated to a utility role since Bryce Harper's taken over as the Phillies' primary first baseman, moving Alec Bohm back to third. Overall, the 27-year-old Sosa is batting .252 with eight homers, 28 runs scored, 23 RBI and a .721 OPS across 228 plate appearances this season.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Out of Sunday's lineup

Sosa is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at Cleveland.

Sosa leads the Phillies with 51 starts at third base this season, but he'll likely see that playing time drop now that Bryce Harper is seeing action at first base. That's the case Sunday, with Alec Bohm moving to the hot corner while batting seventh.
