Soriano (2-4) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 7.2 innings to earn the win Sunday over the Rangers. Soriano gave up a solo home run to Corey Seager in the fourth inning, but that was it. The Angels rallied ahead in the seventh to help Soriano earn his second win in 10 appearances (eight starts) this year. The right-hander has given up just five runs over 23.2 innings across his four appearances in May while posting a 20:8 K:BB in that span. For the year, he's at a 3.30 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 43:22 K:BB through 46.1 innings. The walk rate remains a concern, but Soriano is showing improvement in that regard. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.... See More ... See Less

Angels' Jose Soriano: Fires 5.1 scoreless frames
Soriano tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday. Soriano allowed just two baserunners through five frames before running into trouble in the sixth, when the Cardinals loaded the bases against him with one out. The right-hander was lifted at that point, and Adam Cimber was able to come to the rescue by inducing an inning-ending double play. As such, Soriano was credited with his second scoreless outing over his past three starts, though he lost an opportunity for a victory due to a late collapse by the Angels' bullpen. Soriano has shown flashes of excellence but has been inconsistent since moving into the rotation April 10 -- in seven starts since that date, he's given up one or zero earned runs on four occasions but has yielded exactly four earned runs in each of the other three starts.... Angels' Jose Soriano: Falls apart in fifth inning
Soriano didn't factor in the decision Wednesday against the Pirates after he gave up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out six. The right-hander blanked Pittsburgh through four frames but was unable to get through the fifth, as he surrendered all four runs on three hits and two walks. Soriano has a 1-4 record but has pitched well at times this season with two quality starts, though he's also given up four runs in three of his seven outings. He has a 4.32 ERA and 32:17 K:BB across 33.1 innings and tentatively lines up to face the Cardinals early next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Secures first win
Soriano (1-4) earned the win Friday against the Guardians, surrendering five hits and a walk while striking out three batters across six scoreless innings. Friday was a much-needed bounce-back outing for Soriano, who gave up four runs in 1.2 innings during his previous start against Minnesota. He rarely found himself in trouble versus Cleveland aside from the fifth inning, when the Guardians had runners on second and third base with one out, but a well-timed groundout followed by a walk and a strikeout allowed Soriano to maintain his shutout. He'll carry a 3.77 ERA and 1.29 WHIP heading into his next projected start Wednesday in Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Rocked early in loss
Soriano (0-4) took the loss against the Twins on Saturday, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 1.2 innings while striking out one. Soriano struggled right out of the gate, allowing two walks and a hit in the opening frame while also hitting Ryan Jeffers with a pitch. Things only got worse for the right-hander in the second, when he beaned the leadoff man and managed to retire only two of the next six batters he faced before being relieved by Jose Suarez. It marked the shortest outing of the season for Soriano and the third time in which he's allowed at least three runs. He's also issued three or more walks in three consecutive starts.... See More ... Angels' Jose Soriano: Effectively wild Tuesday
Soriano came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Rays, allowing one run on one hit and five walks over five innings. He struck out six. Making his second start of the season, Soriano threw just 48 of 90 pitches for strikes, but he generated 28 called or swinging strikes and the only hit against him was a fourth-inning single. The right-hander was in line to collect his first win of the season, but Carlos Estevez blew the save in the ninth. Soriano has a 12:5 K:BB through nine innings since moving into the rotation, and with Chase Silseth (elbow) not expected back until early May, he'll get at least a couple more turns. Soriano lines up to make his next start this coming weekend in Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Receives second straight start
Soriano is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Rays. Even though he was touched up for four earned runs on six hits in just four innings in his first MLB start last Wednesday against the Rays, Soriano's 6:0 K:BB and eight swinging strikes on 72 pitches were encouraging. He'll get another crack at Tampa Bay in his second turn through the rotation, this time at Tropicana Field after the prior outing came at Angel Stadium. The 25-year-old could hold down a spot in the Anaheim rotation until Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Struggles in first start
Soriano (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs on six hits over four innings as the Angels fell 4-2 to the Rays. He struck out six without walking a batter. Tampa Bay jumped on Soriano early, scoring three runs in the first inning and tacking on one more in the second, but the right-hander settled down before exiting his first start of the season after 72 pitches (49 strikes). He generated an encouraging 24 called or swinging strikes though, and the 25-year-old should have shown enough to get a longer look in the rotation. His next outing is likely to be a rematch with the Rays early next week in Tampa.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: May be pressed into bullpen role
With Robert Stephenson (shoulder) uncertain to be ready for game action by Opening Day, the Angels are considering whether to move Soriano to a relief role, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Soriano had been stretching out as a starter this spring, but Stephenson's shoulder issue may shift that plan, at least temporarily. Soriano posted a respectable 3.64 ERA in 42 innings as a reliever last season, though he had been primarily a starter in the minors prior to undergoing revision Tommy John surgery in 2021. Angels manager Ron Washington indicated late last week that the team still wants to see what Soriano can do as a starter and suggested that a move to the bullpen would be to "take care of need" before "thinking long term."... Angels' Jose Soriano: Notches hold Saturday
Soriano earned a hold against the Mets on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over two scoreless innings. Soriano had worked exactly one frame in each of his past seven outings coming into Saturday, but he was tasked with covering two against the Mets with the Angels hanging onto a narrow lead. The rookie reliever was up to the task, retiring the side in order in the seventh inning and working around a hit-by-pitch and a single to keep New York off the scoreboard in the eighth. Soriano has emerged as a key piece of the Angels' bullpen since being called up in early June, posting a 2.81 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 44:20 K:BB over 32 innings while frequently pitching in high-leverage situations. He ranks second on the team with 13 holds on the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Yet to be scored upon
Soriano earned a hold against the Rangers on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning. Soriano got the call in the eighth frame in a close contest, emphasizing how quickly he's ascended the bullpen pecking order. Part of that rise is due to injuries to Ben Joyce (elbow) and Matt Moore (oblique), but Soriano has certainly earned his manager's trust as well. The rookie right-hander has yet to surrender a run in six big-league appearances, yielding just one hit and posting a 10:2 K:BB over seven innings. He's picked up five holds in those six outings, so he's worth a look in fantasy leagues that count that category, especially while Moore and Joyce remain out.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Hurls scoreless frame in MLB debut
Soriano worked a scoreless inning against the Astros on Saturday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter. Soriano earned his first call-up to the majors after posting a 4.24 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 31:16 K:BB over 23.1 innings at Double-A this season. The right-hander faced a challenge against the heart of Houston's lineup in his debut outing, but he worked around a one-out walk to Alex Bregman to fire a scoreless frame. Soriano has the strikeout stuff -- including a high-90-s fastball -- to eventually work as a high-leverage reliever, but he's unlikely to see many such opportunities in his initial stint in the majors.... Angels' Jose Soriano: Recalled to MLB bullpen
Soriano was recalled Saturday from Double-A Rocket City, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Soriano will get his first taste of MLB action at age 24, presumably operating as a low-leverage bullpen option for the Angels. He had pitched to a 4.24 ERA with 31 strikeouts through 23.1 innings this season at the Double-A level.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jose Soriano: Sent down to minor-league camp
The Angels optioned Soriano to minor-league camp Saturday. Soriano is a member of the Angels' 40-man roster but wasn't a serious candidate to make the Opening Day club as a pitcher that hasn't advanced past Low-A so far. The right-hander will likely report to Double-A Rocket City and could help the Angels bullpen at some point down the line if he shows the ability to command his arsenal on a more consistent basis....
