Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Progressing in baseball activities
Carpenter (back) took swings off a tee Monday and participated in throwing and running drills Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The 26-year-old was shut down in late May due to a lumbar spine stress fracture, but he's now back to taking part in baseball activities. Carpenter still has significant rehab work to do before being ready for game action, and he'll likely require a minor-league rehab assignment before returning from the 10-day injured list.

Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: To begin baseball activities
Carpenter (back) hopes to resume baseball activities Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Carpenter had been shut down since late May due to a lumbar spine stress fracture but is ready to begin baseball activities in the coming days. While he's still a ways out from returning, it's the first advancement he's made since being placed on the IL. Expect Carpenter to require a multi-game minor-league rehab stint before being cleared. In the meantime, Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez should share the outfield with Riley Greene most nights.

Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Without timeline for return
Carpenter hasn't resumed baseball activities since being diagnosed with a lumbar spine stress fracture in late May, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list May 29 with lumbar spine inflammation, only for his diagnosis to change a couple days later once he underwent further testing. Three weeks after landing on the shelf, Carpenter remains limited to doing what manager A.J. Hinch described as therapy work, so the 26-year-old still looks to be at least a couple weeks away from being ready for game action. During Carpenter's ongoing absence, Matt Vierling has taken hold of a full-time role in the outfield, and Justyn-Henry Malloy has settled in as the Tigers' primary designated hitter.
