  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Inefficient in ninth loss

Marsh (8-9) took the loss versus the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings.

Marsh needed 73 pitches (39 strikes) to get eight outs in a poor start. It's a step back after his one-run, 11-strikeout effort versus the Pirates last Friday, and it's the poorest of his five outings since he rejoined the big-league rotation in late August. Marsh is now at a 4.65 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 121:39 K:BB over 124 innings across 25 appearances (24 starts) this year. Michael Lorenzen (hamstring) lasted 3.1 innings in a rehab start last Friday with Triple-A Omaha, but he also experienced more than the usual soreness after that outing. The last spot in the Royals' rotation is due up again on the road versus the Nationals, and it's unclear if Marsh is in contention for that start, which would likely be his last of the regular season if he gets it.

  • Royals' MJ Melendez: Getting night off

Melendez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

The lefty-hitting Melendez will unsurprisingly take a seat in the series finale while the Tigers send ace southpaw Tarik Skubal to the bump. Tommy Pham will fill in for Melendez in left field.

  • Royals' Yuli Gurriel: Gaining hold of lineup spot

Gurriel will start at first base and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Gurriel will pick up his fourth consecutive start and looks to have settled in as Kansas City's primary option at first base. Since being acquired from Atlanta on Aug. 31, Gurriel has slashed .348/.414/.435 with five runs and four RBI through his first nine games with the Royals.

  • Royals' Freddy Fermin: On bench again Wednesday

Fermin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Fermin is on the bench for the third time in four games, this time against a lefty (Tarik Skubal) after his previous two absences came against right-handed pitching. The Royals had been opening up regular playing time for Fermin behind the plate by using Salvador Perez at first base, but Perez has been taking on more work at catcher lately with Yuli Gurriel gaining traction as a regular in the Kansas City infield.

  • Royals' Kyle Isbel: Sitting versus lefty

Isbel is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Tigers.

Southpaw Tarik Skubal is on the hill for Detroit, so the left-handed-hitting Isbel will take a seat. Garrett Hampson will occupy center field and bat ninth for Kansas City.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Not in lineup Wednesday

Frazier is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Tigers.

After a string a five straight starts, Frazier has now been out of the lineup for two games in a row. His absence Wednesday comes against lefty Tarik Skubal, so it's no surprise the left-handed-hitting Frazier will be on the bench to begin the contest.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting against Skubal

Massey is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Ace lefty Tarik Skubal is getting the start for the Tigers, so the left-handed-hitting Massey will begin the contest on the bench. Maikel Garcia will handle second base as the Royals try avoid the sweep.

  • Royals' Austin Charles: Finishes season at High-A

Charles slashed .257/.353/.386 with 10 home runs and 36 steals in 117 games for Single-A Columbia and was promoted to High-A Quad Cities on Sept. 12.

Charles, who turns 21 in November, logged 186 games at Single-A across the past two seasons before earning the bump to High-A. He entered pro ball as a very raw hitter, which is why he lags behind other position players from his class, but Charles has the type of upside worth waiting on. A 6-foot-5 infielder who split time at third base and shortstop this season, Charles is a plus runner who could grow into plus raw power as he continues to fill out his frame and improve his craft as a hitter. His 25.8 percent strikeout rate and 69.5 percent contact rate at Single-A are still relatively poor, given his age, so Charles may spend significant time at High-A before getting a bump to Double-A.

  • Royals' Lucas Erceg: Takes extra-inning loss

Erceg (2-6) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.2 innings, taking the extra-inning loss versus the Tigers on Tuesday.

Erceg's six-inning scoreless streak came to an end as he faltered in the 10th inning after he kept the game tied in the ninth. He also ended August in rough form, but he's generally brought some stability to the Royals' bullpen since they acquired him from the Athletics. For the year, Erceg is at a 3.53 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 68:16 K:BB while earning 11 saves, 18 holds and five blown saves over 58.2 innings.

  • Royals' Bobby Witt: Swipes 30th bag

Witt went 0-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 3-1 extra-inning loss to the Tigers.

Detroit made sure Witt wasn't going to make a big impact in a game with significant playoff implications for both teams, but he still found a way to contribute. Witt has produced back-to-back 30-30 campaigns, and the 24-year-old has taken his overall offensive game to another level in 2024 with a .331/.386/.598 slash line.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Strong start wasted Tuesday

Ragans came away with a no-decision Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over seven innings in a 3-1 extra-inning loss to the Tigers. He struck out six.

The southpaw delivered his 20th quality start of the season on 105 pitches (66 strikes), but the Kansas City offense squandered multiple chances to give Ragans the lead before eventually losing in the 10th inning. Since the beginning of August, he sports a 2.94 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 64:23 K:BB through 52 innings as the Royals push for their first trip to the playoffs since 2015. Ragans is scheduled to make his next start on the road early next week against the Nationals.

  • Royals' James McArthur: Dealing with Grade 1 UCL sprain

McArthur, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, was diagnosed with a Grade 1 UCL sprain in his right elbow and will be shut down from throwing for 5-to-7 days, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

The 27-year-old won't be able to return before the end of the regular season, but manager Matt Quatraro is hopeful a playoff return is possible. That's likely an optimistic outlook for a UCL injury, but for now, McArthur has yet to be fully ruled out for 2024.

  • Royals' Steven Cruz: Back in big leagues

The Royals recalled Cruz from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.

He'll provide the Royals with a healthy reliever after James McArthur (elbow) went down. Cruz has three scoreless appearances during his time in the majors in 2024.

  • Royals' James McArthur: Goes on IL with sprained elbow

The Royals placed McArthur on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right elbow sprain.

A sprain indicates that he is dealing with ligament damage, although there's no word yet regarding the possibility of surgery. McArthur won't be eligible to return before the end of the season and also seems unlikely to be back for the postseason even if surgery isn't required. The former closer posted just a 6.87 ERA in the second half.
