Holmes walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his 13th save of the season in a 4-2 win over the White Sox. The right-hander is back in a four-way tie for the league lead in saves with Emmanuel Clase, Kyle Finnegan and Ryan Helsley, but Holmes is the only one of the quartet who still sports a 0.00 ERA. The closer's luck on that front will run out eventually, but his 0.98 WHIP and 23:4 K:BB through 19.1 innings highlight how dominant he's been to this point.... See More ... See Less

The right-hander is tied with the Cardinals' Ryan Helsley for the league lead in saves. Holmes kept his ERA a pristine 0.00 with Saturday's performance, although he did give up three unearned runs in his one blown save, and through 15 innings he's delivered a 0.92 WHIP and 18:1 K:BB.... Yankees' Clay Holmes: Lands five-out save
Holmes earned the save Wednesday, allowing one hit with three strikeouts over 1.2 scoreless innings against Baltimore. Holmes capped off an excellent game by the Yankees pitching staff, as they yielded three hits and no runs as a whole. Individually, Holmes logged three strikeouts for the first time all year and his 1.2 innings of work marked his longest outing of the campaign. He's yet to allow an earned run during 15 innings and is tied for the MLB lead in saves with 10.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Secures ninth save
Holmes struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his ninth save of the season in a 4-3 win over the A's. The right-hander needed only nine pitches (seven strikes) to carve up the bottom of the Oakland order. Holmes has been brilliant to begin the season, converting nine of 10 save chances with a 0.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB through 12 innings, and he sits one ahead of the Padres' Robert Suarez for the MLB saves lead.... Yankees' Clay Holmes: Nabs league-leading eighth save
Holmes gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his eighth save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Rays. The veteran right-hander continued his fast start to the campaign. Holmes does have one blown save on his ledger due to some unearned runs, but through 10 innings he sports a 0.00 ERA to go along with his MLB-leading saves total. With the 14-6 Yankees tied for the best record in the majors, save chances should remain plentiful for the team's undisputed closer.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Notches seventh save
Holmes earned the save in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Blue Jays, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. Holmes has yet to allow an earned run through nine appearances this year and he improved to 7-for-8 in save chances, tying Kyle Finnegan and Ryan Helsley for the league lead. The 31-year-old Holmes is establishing himself as one of the better closing options in baseball, earning a firm grasp on the ninth-inning job in New York after pitching to sub-3.00 ERAs in each of his previous two campaigns.... Yankees' Clay Holmes: Secures save in Game 1
Holmes allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader at Cleveland. The right-hander entered with a 3-2 lead and looked to be in trouble after giving up a leadoff double, but Holmes struck out the next two batters on 10 pitches before inducing a groundout to end the contest. The 31-year-old is now 6-for-7 in save chances this season, though he didn't allow any runs in the blown save. In fact, Holmes has yet to surrender an earned run through seven outings this season. With Holmes, Caleb Ferguson and Ian Hamilton all pitching in the matinee Saturday, Victor Gonzalez could be the favorite to step in for a save chance in Game 2, should one arise.... See More ... Yankees' Clay Holmes: Nails down save No. 5
Holmes struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Marlins. The right-hander leads the majors in saves in the early going, and he has yet to allow an earned run through six innings while posting a 3:0 K:BB. Holmes should continue seeing a high volume of save chances for a Yankees team that was the first in MLB to reach double-digit wins this season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Escapes with fourth save
Holmes picked up the save against the Blue Jays on Saturday, striking out one over two-thirds of an inning while allowing one hit. Holmes entered the contest with one out and two runners on as the Blue Jays made a strong comeback attempt late. The right-handed reliever then saw two runners come home while he was on the mound, though both of those would not count against him, as he managed to retire two of the three hitters he faced to notch his fourth save. That ties him with Emmanuel Clase for the major-league lead, while Holmes is also yet to allow a run through his first five appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Picks up save No. 2
Holmes tossed a scoreless inning Saturday in Houston to record a save in the Yankees' 5-3 victory. Holmes failed to record a strikeout for the second time in as many save chances. He disposed of the Astros relatively easy in this one, though, pitching around a two-out hit-by-pitch as he induced his third groundout of the frame. Holmes has plenty of job security as the Yankees' closer in the early stages of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Hangs on for opening-day save
Holmes worked around three hits to deliver a scoreless ninth inning, earning the save in a 5-4 win over the Astros on Thursday. It certainly appeared that Houston was poised to tie the game in the ninth after two of the first three batters reached safely off Holmes. However, Juan Soto threw out Mauricio Dubon at home for the second out to preserve the one-run lead, before Holmes coaxed a groundout off the bat of Alex Bregman to seal the victory. While Thursday's outing may have been more tenuous than Holmes would have liked, the 31-year-old right-hander appears to be locked into the closing job in New York. Holmes recorded 24 saves last season, pitching to a 2.86 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 71:23 K:BB across 63 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Clay Holmes: Locked in as closer
Yankees manager Aaron Boone called Holmes "our closer" following Tuesday's spring training loss to the Mets, per the New York Post. Holmes began last season in a diverse high-leverage role, mixing in closing duties with work in the seventh and eighth innings. However, all but two of his 28 outings following the All-Star break came in the ninth frame or later. Boone's comments Tuesday suggest that Holmes is safely entrenched as the Yankees' closer ahead of the coming campaign, and he could easily challenge the career-best 24 saves he racked up last season if he remains in that role throughout the year.... Yankees' Clay Holmes: Avoids arbitration
Holmes signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Yankees on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Holmes has served as the Yankees' primary closer each of the last two seasons, recording a combined 44 saves. He also managed a career-best 18.3 K-BB% across 63 frames in 2023 and should continue to rack up save chances in 2024.... See More ... See Less -

The 30-year-old made quick work of the Royals, striking out two and inducing a weak groundout by Bobby Witt to end the contest. Yankees' Clay Holmes: Implodes in non-save situation
Holmes (4-3) took the loss against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter in one-third of an inning. Holmes had been on a post-All-Star-break tear coming into Sunday, collecting eight saves in nine chances and allowing just two runs while posting an 18:3 K:BB over 15.2 frames. Yankees manager Aaron Boone thus turned to him in the ninth inning while holding a four-run lead, but things didn't go as planned. Holmes allowed a single, double, triple and walk in the frame and also contributed to his own demise with a throwing error. Luis Arraez's two-run three-bagger tied the score and resulted in Holmes getting the hook, and the righty hurler took the loss when Arraez crossed the plate after his departure. Holmes should still have a firm grasp on the closer role considering his recent run of success, but Sunday's blowup increased his season ERA from 2.01 to 2.80.... See More ... See Less
