Rangers' Igor Shesterkin: Subpar showing Friday
Shesterkin gave up five goals on 38 shots in Friday's 5-2 preseason loss to the Islanders.
Shesterkin gave up three even-strength goals and two power-play tallies, and even though the defense didn't do him any favors, there's no question he struggled badly throughout the contest. Preseason stats shouldn't matter much, however, and the goal was all about allowing Shesterkin to get enough ice time to be ready for Opening Night against the Penguins on Wednesday.

Rangers' Igor Shesterkin: Beaten twice in preseason action
Shesterkin stopped 16 of 18 shots over two periods in Tuesday's 5-4 preseason win over the Devils.
Both goals against Shesterkin came on juicy rebounds, giving him something to work on ahead of the Rangers' regular-season opener in Pittsburgh on Oct. 9. The 28-year-old netminder has won at least 36 games in three straight seasons, but he might need better defensive play in front of him to reverse the downward trend in his ratios -- he's gone from an elite 2.07 GAA and .935 save percentage in 2021-22 to merely good marks of 2.58 and .912 last season.

Rangers' Igor Shesterkin: Between pipes against Devils
Shesterkin will tend the twine for Tuesday's home clash with New Jersey, Jim Cerny of NHL.com reports.
Shesterkin has reached the 35-win mark in three straight seasons and certainly seems capable of reaching that threshold again in 2024-25. The Rangers' decision to bring back Jonathan Quick for another year should ease the workload for Shesterkin, though he figures to make 55-60 appearances in goal for the club this year. As such, don't be surprised to see Shesterkin as one of the first goalies off the board in re-draft formats.
