  • Steelers' Russell Wilson: Injury downplayed, but no timetable

Wilson (calf) did not practice Friday and declined to put a timetable on his return, but said the injury is "nothing too serious," Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

Wilson said his calf injury, which coach Mike Tomlin described as tightness, was sustained while pushing a sled during conditioning tests. Per Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com, Tomlin said Friday's absence wasn't the result of a setback for Wilson, but rather, a result of the Steelers taking a cautious approach "to keep a minor thing from becoming major," and Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the veteran QB could suit up if Pittsburgh had a game to play. Meanwhile, the situation has provided Justin Fields a chance to handle first-team reps and potentially begin building some momentum of his own in a quarterback competition that has thus far seemed strongly tilted in Wilson's favor. It remains to be seen how first-team snaps at the quarterback position will be split once Wilson returns to the field.

  • Steelers' Justin Fields: Working with starters sans Wilson

Fields is getting regular first-team reps while Russell Wilson misses a few days of practice with a calf injury, ESPN's Brooke Pryor reports.

Wilson first noticed calf tightness Thursday morning and has since been limited to observer status in back-to-back practices. He reportedly wanted to participate but was held back by the coaching staff, which suggests it isn't a major injury and the 35-year-old will be back in action soon enough. Coach Mike Tomlin said "nothing has changed" in regard to Wilson having "pole position" for the Week 1 start, but this at least gives Fields the opportunity to take more reps with the players he'll be throwing to if he ends up under center at some point in-season. Tomlin declined to elaborate on a plan for dividing first-team QB reps once Wilson returns to practice.

  • Steelers' Beanie Bishop: Works with first team

Bishop saw most of the reps at nickel with the Steelers' first-team defense Thursday, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

Josiah Scott seemed to be the Steelers' top nickel during OTAs, but it now appears that Bishop has passed Scott on the team's depth chart. Bishop, an undrafted rookie cornerback out of West Virginia, could have the opportunity to make an immediate impact for a Pittsburgh secondary that was middle-of-the-pack in 2023 (16th in passing yards allowed per game).

  • Steelers' Cameron Heyward: Present for camp

Heyward (groin) was a full participant at Thursday's practice, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

There were questions about whether Heyward would hold out of training camp as he continues to look for a new contract, but those were answered after he reported Thursday. The 13-year veteran also underwent offseason surgery to clean up his groin, and it now seems as if he's fully moved past the issue. Heyward is set to make a base salary of $16 million in 2024, and he's expected to remain one of the most impactful defensive linemen in the NFL.

  • Steelers' Russell Wilson: Held back by minor calf injury

Wilson missed Thursday's practice due to calf tightness and is considered day-to-day, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.

Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports that Wilson wanted to practice but was held back by the coaching staff, which gave fellow offseason addition Justin Fields an opportunity to dominate first-team reps. The expectation remains that Wilson will be under center come Week 1, leading a remade offense with a new coordinator (Arthur Smith), two early draft picks on the O-line (OT Troy Fautanu, C Zach Frazier) and open competition for WR spots behind top option George Pickens.

  • Steelers' Cordarrelle Patterson: Dealing with hamstring issue

The Steelers placed Patterson on the reserve/non-football injury list Wednesday with a hamstring injury, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Patterson was evidently injured while away from the team, hence his placement on the NFI list. He can be activated at any time during training camp or the preseason. Patterson signed a two-year deal with the Steelers in the offseason, giving Pittsburgh an experienced return man as well as depth out of the backfield behind Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

  • Steelers' Dean Lowry: Placed on PUP list

The Steelers placed Lowry (pectoral) on the active/PUP list Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Lowry was released by the Vikings on March 12 after appearing in just nine regular-season games before sustaining a torn pectoral muscle injury in 2023. He signed with the Steelers on March 25 to provide depth on the defensive line, but the 2016 fourth-round pick out of Northwestern will begin training camp on the sidelines. Lowry's most impactful season came in 2021 with the Packers, when he registered 42 tackles (24 solo), including a career-high 5.0 sacks, along with four passes defended and one fumble recovery across 17 regular-season games.

  • Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Starts camp on PUP list

The Steelers placed Holcomb (knee) on the active/PUP list Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Holcomb sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 9 of last season against the Titans. The injury was considered to be potentially career-ending, but the 2019 fifth-round linebacker out of North Carolina has spent the offseason rehabbing. Head coach Mike Tomlin said in June that he was hopeful Holcomb would be available at some point during training camp, per Nick Farabaugh of SteelersNow.com. Before sustaining the knee injury, Holcomb recorded 54 tackles (31 solo), two passes defended and two forced fumbles across eight regular-season games in 2023.
